Learning the Art of Holding Space

After 25 years in practice, I have learned that midwifery is not only about clinical skill. It is the art of caring with presence, listening deeply, and developing the discernment to know when to act, and when to hold sacred, steady space so a woman’s own wisdom can emerge. This mentoring honours the midwife as a whole person, recognising that we, too, need to be supported, witnessed, and held. Learn with someone who carries both professional wisdom and lived, personal experience who knows the sacred journey of birth from both sides, in heart, body, and spirit.

Who is this for?

This is an invitation to slow down, reflect, and return to the heart of why you were called to this work.

  • Midwives seeking to deepen and refine woman-centred, relationship-based practice

  • Student midwives learning how the art and science of midwifery live together

  • Those who long to more fully understand what it means to be with woman

What We Explore

  • Building trusting, respectful relationships with women and families

  • The art of deep, attentive listening

  • Supporting autonomous decision-making

  • Learning to navigate sometimes challenging birthworker situations with curiosity and thoughtful questions, always centring the woman

  • Working safely within guidelines while honouring individual woman’s values, needs and aspirations

  • Learning and growing from challenging experiences

  • Creating space for a woman’s own wisdom to emerge

My Philosophy

I believe midwives and birth workers thrive when we collaborate rather than compete. We are here to support women, babies, and families, and to learn from one another, making a difference, one family at a time.

I don’t see “the system” as broken - systems are designed to function with rules, and the people within them (including us) are part of shaping positive change. While navigating systems and guidelines, a woman’s choice and autonomy always comes first.

  • While my primary focus is mentoring midwives, I am deeply passionate about learning, reflection, and mentorship for all women who work in birth and postpartum care.

I warmly welcome doulas and others who support childbearing women and families to reach out. I believe that shared knowledge, respectful dialogue, and lived experience across roles are vital in strengthening birth culture and improving outcomes for women, babies, and families.

If you work alongside women during pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum period and feel drawn to this work, you’re welcome to enquire.

  • That’s completely okay. You don’t need to arrive with a clear agenda. Often clarity emerges through the conversation.

  • Yes. In-person mentoring is available on the Sunshine Coast, depending on availability and scheduling. If you’re local and feel called to meet face-to-face, we can explore what feels most supportive and practical.
